Section 4 - How to Read Tablature

Tablature is the way guitar players write out guitar music. It is better than conventional music notation and far easier to learn.

  • There are six horizontal lines. Each line represents a string of the guitar.
  • The bottom line is the one closest to the floor. It represents the thickest string. That is the sixth string.
  • The top line represents the thinnest string which is the first string.

6th String

1. The 6 horizontal lines represent the 6 strings of the guitar.
2. The bottom line is for the thickest (6th) string.
3. The top line is for the thinnest (1st) string.
4. The numbers on the stings represent what fret to place your fingers on.
5. If there are numbers on top of each other you play them at the same time.
6. A zero means that you play the string open with no fingers.
