Electronic Guitar Tuners

Many players use electronic guitar tuners. They are inexpensive and do a wonderful job. Chromatic ones are the best. Your local music shop will be happy to show them to you and how to use them. If you aren't close to a music store email us to purchase a tuner.

Tuning Without a Piano or Pitchpipe

Assume that the sixth string is in tune. Depress the 6th string behind the fifth fret. Hum this pitch, then play the 5th string open and decide if it's higher or lower. To correct the pitch of the 5th string, you must tighten the string if it's too low, or loosen the sting if it's too high. To tune a string that is too high, it's easier to go below the desired pitch then tune up to the correct pitch.

The turning of the tuning peg must be done very slowly and the tuning peg shouldn't be turned more than one revolution in either direction. This will avoid string breakage and frustration. Once you have tuned the 5th string, repeat the same procedure on the 4th and 3rd strings. When tuning the 2nd string, depress the 3rd string at the 4th fret and tune the 2nd to the 3rd. Then to tune the 1st string, depress the 2nd string at the 5th fret and match the pitch of the 2nd and 1st strings.
